Extra help with English for KS1 and KS2, GCSE and A Level English

KS1, KS2, KS3 and GCSE English tuition

Understanding the content of written text and being able to extract information or data from it is a very important skill. Achieving a good result in GCSE English can be surprisingly difficult. Unlike other subjects, there are few facts. GCSE English for instance is almost entirely focussed on acquiring skills – principally reading and writing.

We test your child’s spelling and reading age. We do two tests for reading. One for sight words only and one to read in context. With younger children we also look at their phonic knowledge and application, and their early reading and writing concept. We give you honest feedback on your child’s strengths and areas of concern, explain our materials and teaching methods to you.

An assessment also gives you a chance to ask any questions and tap into our expertise. This Assessment is FREE, there are no hidden costs and you are under no obligation to enroll.

At Kip McGrath we give students the confidence to write an essay with fluency and structure, developing their comments and observations appropriately for an examiner.

Who benefits from additional English tuition?

We concentrate on improving comprehension, spelling, grammar and essay writing skills to produce a well rounded student, ready for the exams.

• Pupils wishing to maintain and improve current levels of progress
• Pupils lacking confidence in KS1, KS2 and KS3 English or Maths
• Pupils falling behind at school
• Reading, writing or spelling issues
• Difficulties with maths
• Exam Preparation :- SATs; 11+; GCSE’s focus
• Study techniques

As the students approach their exams they are able to work through past papers under exam conditions, which are marked with the examination board's criteria in mind.

We help students primarily in the areas of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Comprehension, English and Maths - from Primary to Secondary. We also offer tuition to help prepare your child for exams such as the Grammar School Entrance tests (AQE and GL assessment), end of year exams and GCSE English and Maths.

Your child will improve if they are supported at school, home and at Kip McGrath. Every child that attends tutoring each week and does all of their set homework will improve - both academically and in self confidence.

Every child is different and every problem is different. After the initial assessment, we will be able to provide an indication of how long tutoring may be required and your child's progress is monitored regularly by continuous assessment and we will also provide regular parental feedback. There is no obligation or contract to attend for any period of time. If, for whatever reason (e.g. change of financial circumstances), you decide you are no longer able to attend, all we ask is a weeks notice.

Homework is an essential part of the Kip McGrath programme, particularly for Reading students. We are aware of each student's school workload so set homework is generally limited to around half an hour each week. If you have difficulty getting your child to complete the homework, please contact us immediately.

If a child is struggling with homework or showing signs of not enjoying school work, a parent will normally
pick up on this. Do not wait until parent’s night but contact the teacher, express your concerns and ask at
what level your child is performing in class. If the situation is not resolved, then perhaps a little extra tuition
may be required.

We offer a free student assessment, which will determine the level at which your child is currently at. We can then advise as to the most appropriate course of action to benefit each student. After assessing a child we sometimes find that they are at the correct level for their age. Some parents wish for their child to remain at the top of the learning curve assisted by the Kip McGrath programme. There are no catches and no hard sell; we make the recommendations and you choose what you feel is appropriate for your child.
